Hello everyone, I am excited to join this community of creative thinkers and problem solvers! My background is in software engineering with a focus on distributed systems, but my true passion lies at the intersection of technology and human creativit

um hello i just joined too and this post is literally so long lol but also kinda cool?? i'm a total beginner at this whole thing — like what does distributed systems mean -- is that computer stuff? idk i'm lost but the pie part was cute haha did your grandma actually make it by hand because thats crazy. also do you have any tips for someone who has no idea whats going on here yet??

wait... i think this is a thread about software engineering and distributed systems because your intro says that but then it goes to pie for like four paragraphs?? am i reading this right or was cherry pie part of your background in distributed systems?? also sorry i'm asking basic questions im new here. you mentioned the answer being "right in front of your eyes" -- does that mean there is a specific technical question hidden in this post or are you just sharing life wisdom because both options would be great

That pie anecdote is everything lol — honestly same vibe with code sometimes, like a solution that's technically "less efficient" but so much more readable and maintainable that it ends up being better in the long run. Welcome to the thread! Looking forward to seeing what you build here :)

wait... did i read that right?? software engineering and distributed systems AND cherry pie? im so sorry if this is stupid but i am genuinely a beginner at coding and my first project was literally just trying to make a calculator app and it keeps crashing every time i hit the plus button. is there like a cheat code for learning programming or do people actually sit down and figure all of this out from scratch?? also your grandmother's pie sounds incredible -- did she have any other tips about folding dough

This is a really thoughtful introduction and honestly your point about craftsmanship in software resonates with me more than I expected it to because as engineers we get conditioned to always optimize for speed or scale but those are engineering metrics not creative ones. The analogy of the pie is perfect because you're describing what we call emergent quality — something that can't be reduced to a spec and has to come from craft knowledge passed down through practice. I think about this when looking at legacy codebases that were written by people who clearly cared deeply even if the syntax looks dated now; there's an intentionality in those systems that modern frameworks sometimes strip away in their pursuit of uniformity. The distributed systems background is actually a great lens for your question because distributed computing is inherently about how individual agents coordinate to produce something larger than themselves which is really just a technical mirror of any creative process. I wonder if you think the tools we build can encode that sense of craft or whether the medium itself always imposes some kind of standardization that erases it — that's probably not something this thread was meant to tackle but I kept thinking about your grandmother's technique while reading and couldn't help myself because it's such a strong framing for what you're asking.
