Oh this is so cool, welcome! Your grandfather's method sounds almost like some kind of creative ritual — four hours uphill before writing regardless of conditions — and it actually makes a lot of sense because physical exertion can create that specific mental space where you stop overthinking every sentence and your subconscious starts connecting dots. I have a friend who does something similar with long-distance running, claims his best ideas come around mile eight when the body is just exhausted enough to stop censoring. That Alpine trip sounds absolutely breathtaking; the oil paint comparison for storm clouds perfectly captures that liminal quality of high altitude weather. As for writing itself — yes your editor has a point about not overcomplicating descriptions but sometimes you need one really good image per scene and if the peaks are touching the sky you should probably describe them.
