For open-world RPGs, definitely check out Skyrim's Enderal if you haven't (it basically acts as an expansion but it's totally separate), and for Fallout 4 there are some absolutely wild settlement mods

For Skyrim there are a couple of mods you should definitely grab — the Unbound armor textures replace everything with something that actually looks like metal instead of grey plastic, and SkyUI is basically mandatory because it makes your mod list readable which is important since I use about 400 of them. Oh man speaking of huge mod lists reminds me of this time back in college when my roommate tried to build a cyberpunk-themed Minecraft server with custom resource packs that were all somehow the wrong resolution so everything looked like an oil painting being dragged through gravel and he spent three days trying to fix it while I just sat on his bed eating chips watching him lose his mind over a texture file. He eventually gave up and deleted the whole thing which is kind of my philosophy with modding — if you spend more than a weekend fixing technical issues you've gone too far into the rabbit hole. Anyway for Witcher 3 try The Witcher 3 HD Reworked by Paul Jahan it completely changes how the lighting looks in Novigrad especially during the vampire contract mission and there is also a witcher gear overhaul that adds hundreds of new armor pieces based on historical designs which I'm obsessed with because medieval practical armor was actually surprisingly advanced. Also if you play Elden Ring definitely look into the Shadow of the Erdtree mods even though DLC isn't out technically some people are already making stuff for it and — sorry this got a bit long, welcome to the sub!

wait i think i clicked on the wrong thread lol sorry this is a coding sub right?? my friend told me to come here for skyrim mod help but everything in this post is about python and data structures -- can someone tell me what 'thread' means in this context because google kept showing me sewing forums instead of reddit? also if you do know anything about rpg mods i'm looking for something that adds more enemies since the vanilla game gets kind of slow after 20 hours but idk

i don't know what this is... wait i think im in the right place? mods for open world games — ok so which ones are good to start with?? like something simple that doesnt break everything i dont want to mess it up before i get anything working i was looking at skyrim and witcher 3 but idk where even to go lol help please

Welcome! Glad you found us. For Skyrim, I'd suggest SkyUI with the MCM framework as a baseline — it makes managing mods way easier. There are some great display tweak mods that help with performance on newer resolutions too if your PC is running into stutters.

Hey welcome to the sub man, glad you made it. For open-world RPG mods I'd start with a few basics like SkyUI for Skyrim if you haven't played in ages because the mod management is literally essential once you get past about fifty files which is where every build ends up anyway and then there are some lighting overhauls that completely change the atmosphere of Nightrise Cell without making it look unnatural. I actually got really into this whole open-world space after my cousin moved to Vancouver for a job last year — he's an architect but honestly I think he just wanted a reason to sit in coffee shops all day because his wife was working remotely and they couldn't stop meeting up at the same places which is funny if you think about it. Anyway, back on point with mods, there are some faction additions that really expand Skyrim's late-game content like Ordinator for combat rebalancing or various quest lines from the Creation Club era even though people argue about those constantly since they aren't exactly free to everyone but most of them work well enough and I tend to play through multiple playthroughs so it doesn't matter too much. Oh and if you're into Fallout 4 there are some incredible settlement building mods that let you design everything from scrap towers to fortified villages which is a rabbit hole in itself because once you start terraforming the map you never stop and then your save file size grows until you need SKSE fixes for texture streaming issues but it's worth it. Welcome aboard! If you're already on Skyrim, I can't recommend Immersive Wakes and Vigilant Force enough — they completely change the atmosphere without breaking anything. Also definitely check out Skyrim Together if you ever want to play with friends in co-op style.
