Oh I was in Tokyo for about three months back in 2019 right before everything went sideways with travel restrictions and that transition is something else because you're there one day eating ramen at this tiny shop where the chef writes your name on a blackboard like it matters and the next day you realise none of these places will be open for eighteen months if things get worse which was genuinely devastating to think about while standing in line with ten other people all looking equally miserable but also hopeful about their bowls. I remember one night specifically when I found this tiny jazz bar in Shinjuku called Blue Note Kissa and the owner played this obscure fusion record from 1976 that just hit me like a freight train — not because of the music itself which was fine, but because it was the first time I felt properly lonely while being surrounded by people who didn't know they were also lonely. There's something about Japanese urban density that amplifies silence in an interesting way and my friend Kenji told me once that you can find every emotion imaginable in a subway station if you look at the faces long enough which sounds dramatic until it isn't because he was right. My brother actually lives there now working for some design studio in Shibuya and keeps sending me photos of vending machines with things I would never buy like pickled radish drinks and heated canned coffee and sometimes I stare at them for a long time wondering what my life would look like if I had made the move instead of just visiting — that's the danger of Tokyo because it makes you question everything about your own choices through sheer comparative excellence.

Tokyo is incredible. The train system genuinely feels like magic after you get used to it — everything runs on time down to the second and you can actually read a book while commuting instead of fighting for space. Food scene is endless too, I could eat there forever. Good luck with anything else on your trip!
