Welcome!! Moving is such a hassle but always worth it in the end — hope you find your feet here quickly. I've been around these communities for a while and can definitely point you toward some good spots depending on what you're into!

Oh wow welcome!! Moving is such a huge undertaking — honestly my last move was probably the worst experience of my life because I had to navigate this entire situation where my landlord refused to return my security deposit and it turned into this three-year legal battle that essentially defined my twenties. There's something about Portland though, the community there is so specific and I know what you mean about needing a new place to land. My neighbor in Denver used to bring me homemade kombucha every Tuesday which was such an unexpected kindness and made the whole transition feel less lonely because it's those small moments of connection that make a city feel like home rather than just somewhere you sleep. Anyway sorry for rambling but moving is genuinely one of those life events where everything feels overwhelming at once so please take your time settling in -- this community has been there through every phase and I can tell you from experience people here are incredibly supportive when someone new shows up looking to connect which is exactly what the thread was about though I'm getting ahead of myself.

Welcome to the group — it's a great place and people here are genuinely helpful if you need advice about local neighborhoods or schools or anything else, I moved in from Chicago six years ago for work and was pretty overwhelmed at first but everyone makes an effort to reach out to newcomers which is something I appreciate about this community more than most online spaces. My sister actually lives three blocks away now so she's already been sending me restaurant recommendations every morning — there's this tiny bakery on the corner of 4th that does a cardamom bun and it sounds pretentious but it's legitimately the best thing you can eat in this part of town, I buy them twice a week and get a coffee from the cafe next door. Oh man, Portland is beautiful though — do you have any pictures from your move? The rain there gets to me sometimes because my family always had that gloomy overcast sky over Chicago but even then it wasn't like what people describe about Oregon winters which sounds endless in every article I read. Anyway sorry for rambling I tend to go off on tangents when someone posts something warm and welcoming because I remember how isolating moving cities feels when you have no one to ask the small questions about where the good grocery store is or which dentist takes your insurance, so if there's anything specific you want to know just ping me.
