how do i even start?
hi im literally so lost and dont know where to begin... anyone have a roadmap or just tell me what tools people actually use?? tysm <3
honestly just pick one thing and commit for like 15 minutes — that's always how it goes with me, you don't need a master plan or anything
I think people who ask this have been staring at blank screens for too long because once you're actually doing it the paralysis goes away which is funny to me because I used to be terrible with that and there was a summer in my early twenties when I lived in Portland and had no job and just wrote on a coffee shop computer every morning for three months straight and by the end of it I realized that the only real problem wasn't the blank page but the belief that you needed to know what you were writing before you started which is like trying to see the destination while building the road. My uncle used to say something similar about his garden saying don't worry about where the tree ends just keep digging the hole and I always thought he was being vague until I actually dug a hole and realized there are no bad holes only unfinished ones anyway that's not really helpful for your specific question but i found it useful at the time and maybe someone else will too.
The hardest part is always just getting something down on paper because you think it has to be perfect before anyone sees it but honestly that's a lie everyone tells themselves and I learned this the hard way when I was starting my first project in college which was probably ten years ago — remember how everything felt so overwhelming back then with email being something people actually used for schoolwork instead of just Slack pings? Anyway the point is you should literally write one sentence today. Just one. Don't worry about structure or whether it sounds intelligent because nobody cares that much as your first draft and I still have a notebook from 2014 where I wrote down every terrible idea I ever had and looking back at them now makes me laugh because they weren't bad the ideas were fine I was just too scared to ship anything. Oh man speaking of shipping did you know my cousin tried to launch a podcast about rare succulents last summer and she recorded like fifty episodes but never published any because she kept redesigning the logo over and over again which is exactly what we do with writing projects. So here's your permission: write something bad today so that tomorrow you have something already written to edit. It's literally the only way forward I swear.
I started by making one tiny thing and failing at it every day for two weeks until I stopped caring about failing and just kept doing it, which is a weird phrase to say but that's basically how everything works in this space -- you have to be willing to look like an idiot for a while before anything of value emerges from the process. There was this one time when I tried to build something similar and ended up spending three days on a single feature that nobody wanted, which taught me more than any tutorial ever could because now I ask questions first instead of shipping garbage blind. My brother did something similar with his woodwork shop and he used to say that the wood tells you what it wants to be before you force it into shape, which sounds mystical but is actually a really practical way to think about design -- respect the medium's constraints instead of fighting them. The point is just begin somewhere small enough that failure doesn't feel catastrophic because then you can afford to keep trying until something clicks and once something clicks everything else becomes ten times easier for some reason nobody has ever explained properly
The trick is to reduce everything until you find the one thing that feels like actual work instead of performative preparation because I used to spend weeks designing workspace aesthetics and color-coding bullet journals without ever writing a single sentence which is actually funny now looking back but at twenty-five it felt like progress so if you're stuck just write five minutes and stop. My sister did the exact opposite — she's incredibly disorganized in her process but sits down every morning at 6 AM regardless of motivation which sounds romantic until I tell you she has a habit of eating an entire bag of almonds while doing nothing productive for thirty minutes because that was how she got through her thesis and now it's just a nervous tic. There's something about the silence in my office when the heater kicks on that makes me want to either produce great work or take a nap which is basically fifty-fifty chance any given Tuesday and honestly if you can't decide between those two options just open whatever document exists already and type one sentence because momentum is more important than structure. I remember this one summer I moved to a small apartment with no furniture except a mattress on the floor and a lamp that flickered — that was actually my most productive year because there were literally nowhere else for me to go so the boundary between rest and work collapsed entirely which sounds terrible in retrospect but it taught me more about focus than any productivity system ever could. So start small. Write badly. Fix it later if you have energy. The perfectionism is a lie anyway
okay but what does "organic" mean in this context... like literally natural or like a coding thing??? and also where do i go first because everyone keeps saying just start somewhere and that doesnt help at all -- is there a list of steps? anyone?? im so lost right now thx
