Hi everyone, I'm thrilled to join this community. A bit about me — I work as a software engineer by day and spend my evenings stargazing from my backyard with a small telescope I built from scratch (it has quirks but it works). I love anything involving technology and the natural world colliding. Actually speaking of stars — did you know that some galaxies contain supermassive black holes billions of times heavier than our sun? It's mind-blowing when you think about it. This reminds me of a camping trip I took in 1998 with my grandfather, who was also an amateur astronomer but had this ancient telescope he brought everywhere like a sacred object. We spent three nights at Lake Tahoe and he made me try to find Andromeda through a viewfinder that was basically a pipe taped together. It didn't work very well because the mirror was loose and we just ended up looking at blurry shapes, but I still remember the smell of campfire smoke on my clothes for weeks afterward. There was this one night where everything aligned perfectly and he pointed it out to me — not Andromeda specifically since that wasn't what we were aiming for, but a cluster of stars that looked like diamonds scattered on velvet. That moment defined astronomy for me in more ways than any textbook ever could because it showed me how something simple can become profound if you approach it with patience and the right person by your side. Anyway, I got way off track there — my point is that I'm excited to be here and learn from all of you!

Hey there! Coffee lover here too — I'm currently obsessed with trying to perfect a pour-over setup at home, but it never feels quite as good as getting out for breakfast coffee. Your dog sounds adorable (I saw the picture!). As an amateur astronomer myself, have you been able to see anything interesting lately? The recent meteor showers have been stunning!

Nice to meet you! I'm also obsessed with stargazing — have you ever tried a telescope that can see Jupiter's bands? That was my gateway into amateur astronomy and it's honestly addictive.

Hey there, I'm totally in the same boat with all three of those passions which is actually kind of rare because people usually pick a lane but coffee and astronomy both require patience -- you wait for your brew to steep just like you wait for the clouds to clear over Jupiter or whatever else you have lined up that night. Speaking of waiting, my dog Buster has this hilariously specific ritual where he sits at the door staring into space before going out which I always joke is him contemplating his own existence but honestly it's probably just old age because we got him when he was a puppy and now he looks like a wrinkled potato with one ear that stands up. We used to take him camping every summer in Northern California and there was this one night where the Milky Way was so bright you could see all those dark dust lanes which is what makes it look textured rather than just flat light -- I still have photos from that trip stored on an old hard drive I can't open anymore because the file format is deprecated but they would be incredible. Anyway, coffee — I'm a pour-over person exclusively which means my kitchen has three different kinds of filters and two scales for no practical reason other than obsessive precision, but there's something satisfying about measuring 18 grams of beans to the tenth of a gram because it feels like science even though it's just caffeine. If you ever do any amateur astronomy events in your area let me know because I'm always looking for telescope meetups and my current rig is okay but not great, which means I'd love to see what someone more serious has set up.

Same here with the astronomy hobby! I've been obsessed with trying to track galaxies from my backyard lately but cloud cover is definitely testing my patience. Also -- what kind of coffee do you usually make? I can never decide between a pour-over and just using the Keurig when I'm running late, though the quality difference is huge lol

Wow welcome to the community — I'm also a huge coffee nerd but my setup is pretty different from yours since I use a La Marzocco Linea Micra for daily espresso and then switch over to Aeropress with some light-roast Ethiopian single origins on weekends when I have more time to experiment, which honestly might be overkill because the difference between them isn't always worth all that gear but you never know until you try it. Anyway astronomy is another hobby of mine though not amateur like yours since my dad used to take me camping every summer and we'd set up his Celestron C8 SCT at remote sites — I can still remember one night in 2014 where the air was so clear that Saturn's rings were visible down to the Cassini Division which blew my mind because I had never seen anything that sharp through an eyepiece before. That trip changed everything for me and I ended up becoming a hobbyist photographer too and now I spend most of my weekends doing long-exposure captures from his old backyard observatory in Montana where we still have all our equipment stored even though he moved to Florida about six years ago which is funny because now I have to drive out there every fall just to get some decent dark skies. Anyway sorry for rambling but your post caught me off guard and got me thinking about my own hobbies and it's cool that this community has people with so many different interests.

I also love astronomy but I'm more into radio than optical because my balcony is constantly lit up by streetlamps which makes deep-sky viewing basically impossible unless you use a filter and even then it sucks, though there's something about the sheer scale of it that always grounds me when things get overwhelming. My dog used to sit on the roof with me while I set up the telescope and he'd tilt his head at the rings of Saturn like he understood what was happening which honestly is one thing you can't explain with physics or astronomy — pure intuition. Speaking of dogs my grandfather had this golden retriever named Barnaby who would always bring a tennis ball to everyone in the house even when they were sleeping and he carried that attitude his entire life because he genuinely believed everyone wanted to play at all times which is probably why I keep getting into random tangents like this because it reminds me of how simple things can be compared to trying to calculate orbital mechanics on your balcony while a cat knocks over your eyepiece.

Oh cool I love stargazing too but what telescope are you using because I always end up just looking through binoculars and then someone will point out Jupiter's moons which is fine that's great those little dots have names like Io and Europa which sounds more like a space opera than actual science and honestly the whole astronomy thing reminds me of this one time in middle school when my dad got obsessed with buying telescope lenses online and we ended up stacking them all together on our balcony until I was about ten years old standing there in pajamas staring at what turned out to be a very bright streetlamp three blocks away but he wasn't disappointed because his explanation was that the light pollution actually helped reveal distant nebulae which is obviously wrong but it was also kind of beautiful the way he defended science with such passion even though we were looking at a halogen bulb and I realized then that being an amateur astronomer isn't about seeing things clearly it's about wanting to see them so badly that you don't mind if they're blurry for a while which is actually a really good metaphor for life in general because most of us are just figuring stuff out through binoculars in the dark and hoping someone points out the moons anyway welcome to the thread

Welcome to the sub! Coffee lover here too — I'm always looking for new bean recommendations if you have any favorites. Also wanted to ask about your telescope setup since amateur astronomy is a big interest of mine as well. Would love to hear what gear you're running and what kind of targets you find yourself tracking most often.
