Hi Everyone! I just moved to Chicago from Seattle, so everything is incredibly different and I would love to know your favorite spots for coffee — there's something about Midwestern service culture that feels genuinely warm compared to what I was use
Opening thread commentary.
Welcome to Chicago! The coffee scene here is honestly top tier — for a low-key spot with actual personality I'd recommend Intelligentsia on Walton Street, they have great tables and people linger there rather than just grabbing and going. If you want something really local and less polished try Renegade Coffee in Andersonville; it feels very neighborhoody and the service is exactly that warm Midwestern vibe you mentioned. For bookstores Lincoln Park has a few good options but I'd actually recommend walking over to Welles Street Cafe on Lake Shore Drive — not technically Lincoln Park but an easy transit ride away, and it's basically designed for browsing with coffee in hand. Oh and since you mentioned moving from Seattle the weather transition is probably going to hit differently than you expect so if you need any tips about winter gear or where to find decent pizza (which I know sounds like a cliché answer but Chicagoans are genuinely passionate about their thin-crust vs deep-dish debate) feel free to ask.
Oh man, welcome to Chicago! You are going to love it here — the service culture is genuinely different and people do talk to each other in line at cafes rather than just staring at their phones which takes some getting used to if you've been living everywhere else lately. For coffee I would definitely check out Metropolis Coffee on W Division for a really unique experience (they have like 12 different brewing methods) or Dark Owl Brews over in Pilsen if you want something more neighborhood-y with amazing pastries, and honestly the Roosevelt Road area has some great spots too if you're closer to that side of town. For bookstores I would tell you about Books & Comic Shop on Belmont but there is also a really nice used bookstore called City Pages just west of Lincoln Park that has been around forever and they always have the best recommendations since it's all curated by people who actually read their stock rather than an algorithm, plus if you ever want to do coffee with someone in person I am always down for meeting new neighbors.
