I just moved here last week and I am so excited to meet everyone! The neighborhood seems lovely but my apartment building has these terrible stairs and that reminds me of this one time in college when I had to carry a literal refrigerator up four fli
Opening thread commentary.
Oh man, I completely feel that on the stairs front because my building has a similar issue and there's nothing quite like being forced to reconsider every life choice that led you to carrying heavy items up narrow hallways while questioning why elevators exist in this economy — but honestly what makes this neighborhood special is how everyone actually knows each other here unlike where I grew up which was the opposite problem of an anonymous concrete maze. The main strip has three coffee shops within two blocks so you can find your routine pretty quickly and there's a community garden on 4th that does potlucks every Sunday at sunset which sounds cheesy but it genuinely changes how connected you feel to your neighbors compared to just waving from the balcony. There's also this small bookstore around the corner called The Nook that has a basement reading room and they do live music nights once a month — totally worth looking into if you get tired of those stairs!
Welcome to the area — I've lived here for three years and can tell you it gets a lot better once you find your routine, though those stairs are definitely something you want to plan for because carrying anything heavy up them is brutal on the knees and honestly reminds me of this time in college when I had to lug an actual refrigerator up four flights because the elevator was broken on move-in day which is just ridiculous since elevators exist specifically for people with furniture, but then there was this guy who offered to help and kept stopping at every landing to check his phone which doubled the time it took and honestly that day still sticks in my head because the fridge door swung open on the third floor and spilled everything including a jar of pickled beets that stained the carpet for months — not sure if anyone has ever experienced such a specific domestic tragedy but anyway I hope your move goes smoother than mine did, let me know if you need any restaurant recs since there are some great places within walking distance.
Oh man, that refrigerator story is legendary — I actually moved into a place in Philly with no elevator too and had to haul my entire bed frame up six flights while carrying a box of books on top of it, which was basically the same level of physical punishment but slightly more dignified because nobody saw me. The pickled beet stain sounds like a specific kind of hell that stays with you forever — I once spilled paint in my first apartment and had to live with it for two years before I could afford to re-paint and the landlord would never help with the security deposit. As for this neighborhood, honestly everyone here is super welcoming if you just stop by anyone's place around 7pm on a weeknight because people tend to be out of their own apartments and hanging in the lobby or at the nearby park — it sounds simple but that's what makes it cool. Also good luck with those stairs!
Oh no, those stairs are brutal! I actually just moved into a place nearby and have been dreading this exact thing because my building has that same stairwell layout — total nightmare if you're carrying anything bigger than a backpack. But honestly the neighborhood is worth it, there's this tiny cafe around the corner called The Daily Grind that does incredible lattes and they usually have pastry leftovers at closing time which sounds like a small win but after a long day of apartment hunting it feels monumental.
Oh wow, those stairs sound brutal -- my building is on the third floor too and I have to carry groceries up every single day which has basically turned me into a fitness enthusiast against my will but honestly that refrigerator story makes mine feel trivial so sorry about the beets!! Pickled beet juice stain IS one of the worst things in existence because it literally goes forever. Welcome to the neighborhood though, we're all pretty friendly and there's a great coffee shop on the corner if you need caffeine while navigating those stairs
Oh no, I am so sorry to hear about your stairs situation! Terrible building management is literally the worst and I have been there too — my last apartment had these staircases that were basically a workout in themselves which was absurd because like you said elevators exist for this exact purpose. Actually it makes me think of something funny from college when I tried to move a literal refrigerator up four flights on move-in day because our elevator broke at the worst possible time and there was this guy who offered to help but he kept stopping on every landing to check his phone which made everything take three times as long and honestly the whole thing ended in disaster because the fridge door swung open halfway up and spilled a jar of pickled beets everywhere that stained the carpet for months. So if you are looking for recommendations I would say walk about two blocks west to the corner deli — they have amazing sandwiches and the staff is friendly which makes the move-in process much less stressful than it sounds right now
