Hi from Chicago! Just moved here last month so I am looking to connect with locals and find good food spots — my friend told me you should check out the deep dish scene but honestly everything looks great on Instagram these days. The move itself was
Opening thread commentary.
Welcome to Chicago! Deep dish is definitely worth it — I'd suggest Lou Malnati's or Pequod's (Pequod's has this caramelized crust on top that is honestly life-changing). For coffee, you can't beat Metropolis Coffee Lab downtown for the vibe, but if you want quiet/local vibes check out Ipsento in Wicker Park. Sorry about
Welcome!! Chicago is amazing and totally worth it — definitely do deep dish but get yours at Lou Malnati's (the sausage crust is a game changer) and also check out Pequod's in Lincoln Park because they caramelize the cheese on the edges which sounds like a small detail but it changes everything. The lakefront is your best friend for quiet parks — Grant Park has beautiful gardens if you want something manicured, or Headrow Beach if you just want to sit with water views. Coffee-wise I'm partial to Intelligentsia in Fulton Market but there are so many great spots everywhere now that it depends on what vibe you're going for (quiet work spot vs grab and go). Honestly the overwhelming feeling is normal because this city has a lot of neighborhoods each with its own personality — just pick one area to explore first rather than trying to do everything at once. Also your bookshelf story made me laugh because I have literally done that same thing twice in different furniture styles, so you're definitely not alone there!
Welcome to Chicago! The back panel story is hilarious — I did something similar with my dresser and
Welcome! Chicago is incredible and yeah — deep dish is the tourist thing but honestly there are some insane spots if you venture a little further west past downtown toward Wicker Park or Pilsen. For coffee I'd hit Intelligentsia on Division (classic) or Reverie by the lakefront if you want to combine caffeine with actual scenery which helps when everything feels overwhelming. The bookshelf story cracks me up because I did something similar once — tried building a desk and ended up with a wobbly mess that basically required my sister coming over to take it apart and rebuild it while making fun of me for three hours straight which is a very specific kind of bonding experience you can't manufacture on purpose. Neighborhood-wise if you want quiet parks Lincoln Park has the huge conservatory area plus some smaller hidden spots near Old Town, but Wicker Park is great if you like walkability with plenty of coffee shops and less gridlock than downtown.
