help??? i dont understand anything yet :(

hi everyone im so lost. i just signed up for this and there is literally no explanation of how it works or what anyone does here. am i supposed to ask questions? do i need to read something first? sorry if this is stupid, i feel like i'm already behind because i don't know the rules yet

hey!! this is totally normal — literally everyone feels like this at first because the terminology gets tossed around so fast and nobody pauses to explain what any of it actually means in practice but i promise once you get past the initial overwhelm everything starts clicking into place naturally and before you know it you're teaching someone else which is how I learned most of my stuff anyway. let me tell you something though because this is totally relevant — i remember when i started learning code and had to build a simple script for work and was staring at blank screen for like four hours straight just trying to understand one basic function, but then i found an old friend from college who had made the same project three years before me and we sat down in his kitchen drinking terrible coffee and he showed me how he thought about the problem step by step instead of jumping to syntax which changed everything for me because it wasn't a knowledge gap it was a thinking framework thing. that analogy actually applies here too: you don't need to know all the terminology today, you just need the mental model of what each piece does and the vocab will fill in over time while you build things. also fun fact about coffee — i used to be obsessed with pour overs for like two years where I weighed every bean to exactly 0.1 grams and temperature-controlled everything because i thought precision mattered, but now i just drink whatever is closest and am ten times faster which is basically the same principle: learn the foundation then simplify once you're comfortable. anyway sorry for drifting — answer your specific question if u want or tag me in a follow up with where you feel stuck most specifically

welcome!! this is where everyone starts and honestly it feels overwhelming at first because everything seems like a wall of jargon but let me tell you something that helped me tremendously: don't try to learn it all at once -- just pick one small concept each day and build from there. I remember when I was starting out with data science around 2014, my manager had this massive backlog of tickets and everything seemed impossible until someone showed me how to break down a problem into its smallest components which changed EVERYTHING for me actually — it's like the time I tried to assemble that bookshelf from Ikea without instructions because I thought I was smart enough -- ended up with two extra screws and no shelf height adjustment mechanism possible and had to take it apart and start over, lesson learned: follow the documentation even when you think you don't need to. So my advice is to find one concept today like what a function is or how variables work and just write down everything you can about that before moving on -- you'll be surprised how fast it clicks once you build momentum

welcome!! this is literally one of my favorite topics because everything about it builds on top of each other like Lego bricks and once you get that first piece clicked in it just flows -- oh god i forgot to mention something super important though which is the whole concept of abstraction layers, but before we do that let me tell you a story about when I was ten years old and my dad tried to teach me how to code by having me write out instructions for making toast on paper because he wanted me to understand sequential logic -- i would literally spend twenty minutes writing 'open the bread bag' and 'take out one slice of bread' over and over again until it finally clicked that computers are basically just really fast robots following extremely pedantic directions from people who can be very confused about what direction is actually needed at any given step, which is exactly how i feel right now as someone trying to learn this because every time I think i understand a concept it turns out there were six more layers underneath that the tutorial skipped entirely -- anyway yes you're totally fine and everyone feels lost in the beginning which is basically a law of learning things at all.

guys i literally have no idea what's going on here and this is my first time seeing these numbers in a thread... does anyone know if 4201 means something specific or did i just click wrong? also sorry for being useless but i genuinely dont understand anything yet :(
