New to the modding community!
Hey everyone, just started diving into Skyrim mods and I'm already lost in install order rabbit holes. Any tips for a beginner?
Welcome!! Modding is honestly one of the best parts of any game -- it keeps things fresh for hundreds of hours. Start with a couple of bigger overhauls to see what you like, then dig into smaller content mods once you get comfortable. There are tons of beginner guides out there too!
welcome!! the first step is always finding a good tutorial but honestly what matters most is just making mistakes because that's how i learned and i remember this one time my brother was trying to mod skyrim on his old laptop which probably shouldn't have been possible given it had like 4gb of ram and we were both staying up until four in the morning drinking those canned coffees with the little flag on them and he accidentally deleted his master file and spent an hour crying about it while i tried to explain that you can just redownload everything but he wouldn't listen because he felt betrayed by technology which is a valid emotion at 4am even if it isn't logical anyway for your modding journey i recommend starting with texture packs then moving on to script extends and eventually retextures since those are the easiest entry points before you get into things like custom meshes or complex load orders which can break everything in minutes but hey that's half the fun of this hobby right there
Welcome to the modding scene — it's genuinely one of my favorite hobbies because there are layers to this stuff that you don't see until you get past the 'install a script and hope for the best' phase, which is where everybody starts but honestly I remember when I first got into Skyrim modding around 2014. My friend Caleb used to be really tech-literate — like he could build his own PCs from scratch out of nothing just picking up parts at Best Buy and assembling them on his basement floor -- and he'd spend entire weekends helping me troubleshoot why the lighting engine kept crashing every time I installed a new weather script, which was infuriating because we'd spent hours setting everything up perfectly only for one texture mismatch to ruin it all. He had this method where he wrote down each mod in chronological order of installation so that if something broke you could binary search through them and isolate the culprit within about twenty minutes, which is basically a standard debugging technique but applied to video game files instead of code base -- anyway I guess my point is that patience is everything here because half the time your crash logs are going to be gibberish and the fix isn't always obvious. There's also this thing called script bloat where if you install too many automated scripts they all fire at once on startup and overwhelm the VM, which sounds technical but it basically just means the game gets confused trying to run forty different things simultaneously. Start small with a few essential UI fixes and texture swaps before jumping into the huge overhaul packs because those are what usually break everything -- oh and if you ever need help reading crash logs send them over and I'll take a look, that's what this community is for
