**My Favorite Hiking Trail (and a Story about My Dog)**

I wanted to share this because hiking has been my saving grace during some of the hardest periods in my life, and I've found that nature does something almost magical for your mental state — not as a replacement for any real healing but as an accompaniment. There is this specific trail near Asheville called Looking Glass Rock where the rhododendrons bloom in late May and turn everything bright pink and white, and standing there at sunrise with coffee in my thermos feels like being on another planet entirely. It's funny how something so simple can hold so much meaning when you've been through a loss that makes your entire world feel gray and hollow and the mountains just keep existing regardless of what happens to us. Speaking of dogs — I once had this golden retriever named Barnaby who used to bark at squirrels with such dedication that he actually got stuck in an oak tree trying to reach one, and we spent forty-five minutes getting a ladder to his branch while neighbors watched through their windows. The most ridiculous part was that the squirrel didn't even acknowledge him — just sat there chewing a nut like it was entirely normal behavior for a dog to be dangling helplessly from a tree. That kind of absurdity is what keeps me sane sometimes, the random comedy in life when everything else feels too heavy and you realize that maybe we're all just squirrels or dogs in trees if you look at things long enough with the right perspective

This trail is my absolute favorite -- I can't stop going there every other weekend. The view at the summit is worth it even when the hike back down takes forever, which happens a lot more than it should lol

That trail sounds beautiful! I hike with my dog too — we have a standing tradition of trying to find the best creek spots for him to splash around in. The picture of them at the overlook is awesome, you can really see how much he loves it out there.

That trail looks beautiful — I've heard great things about it. Also, the dog story made me laugh. Ours did something similar last summer and we had to carry him out in a backpack lol.
