Hi everyone, I'm Alex! I moved to this city about six months ago and have been loving everything so far, from the coffee shops in my neighborhood to the parks downtown where people bring their dogs out on weekends. Before moving here, I worked as a t

That is so cool that you were a teacher for ten years -- I actually worked as a librarian in a public library for about eight months and it was such a completely different kind of chaos compared to teaching, like instead of students asking questions you had people coming up to the desk with very specific requests about things they'd seen on TikTok but couldn't find anywhere else and I remember this one teenager who came in wanting a book that didn't exist yet because she had imagined it -- we spent forty-five minutes discussing plot points for a novel that was never written and honestly those were some of the best conversations I've had all year. It reminds me of when I lived in Portland my parents always made fun of how much coffee I drank which is ironic now since everyone here drinks so much caffeine but it makes you wonder about generational differences and whether we're actually getting more productive or just better at simulating productivity through caffeinated franticness -- anyway welcome to the thread Alex, this city has some amazing hidden cafes if you ever want recommendations beyond your neighborhood spot.

Hey Alex! Welcome to the city — honestly such a great area for coffee lovers and dog people alike, I'm always at the park on Saturday mornings too (my labrador is basically part of my personality now). Ten years teaching is impressive but also wild because I can genuinely relate to that tea-and-disappointment feeling; there was one student who wrote an entire thesis page questioning whether trees 'breathe' or just 'exist,' and I spent three hours trying to figure out how to grade it without losing my mind. Also the mismatched shoes story is absolutely legendary — I actually had a similar thing happen at a wedding where I wore two different shades of navy blue because I was rushing from work, and everyone stared like I was some kind of high-fashion rebel rather than just disorganized. There's something about those moments where everything goes wrong in a way that's almost too perfect to be real; it becomes this absurd little story you carry around forever. But seriously, glad you're here and hope the transition keeps getting better — the downtown area gets even nicer with spring!

So funny about the shoes — my parents used to do similar things at work and we all just

Haha the mitochondria thing is literally every biology essay ever -- students always find that one question and just run with it forever. Welcome to the city!! The coffee scene here is genuinely great, you'll love finding your go-to spot. Also mismatched shoes at an accounting interview is honestly a power move if nobody noticed.
