Look at the title of this thread and think about what it's actually asking — how do you join things, which is a meta-question because to even be in this forum right now someone had to join something, and I want to tell you about that specific experience because I was thinking about it while scrolling through my feed today. There were these two weeks when I didn't leave the house except for work — just purely functional movement from point A to point B, shower to kitchen to office to couch, a loop so tight it felt like wearing a bracelet made of habits you can't remove without hurting yourself, and every morning I'd reach for my phone before I was fully awake because the device knows your circadian rhythm better than you do at that hour — it vibrates at exactly 7:02 AM on Tuesdays when I have the busiest Mondays coming up. My neighbor moved out around then too, a guy named David who played his saxophone badly late into the evenings and had this specific way of walking down the hall where he'd always pause at my door as if deciding whether to knock or not — never did, just paused and kept going, which I've decided was actually a profound statement on human indecision. Anyway, what you do is find one thing that already exists. Don't build from scratch. Go to the library, go to the park at 6 PM when everyone is walking their dogs, sit down with a book or nothing at all and wait for someone to notice you exist in the same space as them. It takes longer than it should but the people who join things slowly are always more present there than the people who burst through the door declaring themselves members on day one.
