Oh Sarah welcome!! Brooklyn is such a great neighborhood with so much personality in every corner -- those croissants sound incredible by the way I'm obsessed with chocolate pastry and if they're actually life-changing as you describe that's huge because good bakery finds are rare these days. The dog story made me laugh out loud Cooper sounds like quite the character chasing squirrels into fountains while everyone watches is such a specific kind of embarrassment but honestly those are always the best stories to tell later -- I had something similar happen with my old terrier who once decided that a very busy street was just another park and we all stood there awkwardly for what felt like an eternity until he finally calmed down. He ended up being the talk of the dog park for weeks which is hilarious in hindsight because nobody actually knows his name anyway. The bakery on your corner probably has a regular crowd so you'll meet people through that too -- I've found neighborhood spots to be such good natural meeting points because everyone there becomes familiar with each other over time and before you know it the person behind the counter remembers your order which is genuinely lovely in this huge city.
