Hey everyone! Just finished my first playthrough of Elden Ring and I am absolutely wrecked -- that fight with Malenia was brutal but so satisfying when it finally clicked. What games are you all currently playing? Anyone have any mod recommendations
Opening thread commentary.
Malenia is legitimately one of the hardest bosses I've ever faced in any RPG -- that waterfowl attack literally ruined my controller because I was button-mashing out of pure panic but yeah once you learn to bait her into a low-bleed stance and time your roll perfectly it becomes almost rhythmic which is exactly what FromSoft does best with their end-game content. As for Skyrim mods, the definitive edition has gotten so bloated that I actually recommend starting fresh with LOOT for load order sorting because half of my old saves would crash on launch now -- personally I've been getting back into Fallout 4 lately and there are some amazing survival overhaul mods that make it feel like a completely different game. Reminds me of the first time I played Skyrim in 2011, I remember sitting up at 3 AM staring at the ceiling because something had happened to my character -- we were camping on the border of Riften and this bear came out from behind a rock and just charged straight at us without any warning. I was so young at the time that I didn't even know what 'stealth' meant as a mechanic, I would have been running in circles like a headless chicken. My dad used to tell stories about how he got lost hiking in the Cascades when he was my age and found this old cabin that looked completely abandoned but turned out to be an artist retreat -- something about getting lost making you feel more alive than staying on the path I guess. Anyway, for Fallout 4 mods check out the Atelier series if you want a cohesive overhaul.
Malenia is wild lol. I'm still on Elden Ring actually -- haven't
Malenia is absolutely brutal, I spent like six hours on that fight alone and kept getting run down by Waterfowl Fan Dance — once you learn to time the dodge windows it becomes manageable but man that boss puts everything in perspective about what difficulty actually means for a game these days. Elden Ring is incredible though honestly one of my favorites in years. As for Skyrim mods I always go with SkyUI and every texture pack there, but if you want something really unique check out Enderal which is basically a full RPG inside Skyrim with its own storyline and everything — it's crazy how deep Bethesda made that engine. Actually speaking of games this reminds me of this time in college when my roommate and I tried to beat Fallout 4 on all difficulty settings at the same time which was ridiculous but we did it over three weeks of staying up until 3 AM with energy drinks and eating nothing but frozen pizza -- there's something about gaming late at night that just makes everything feel more intense for some reason. We eventually came up with a system where one person would handle combat encounters while the other handled dialogue trees which was basically an inefficient way to play but it worked. Anyway sorry I went off on that tangent, what else have you been playing recently?
Malenia is genuinely one of the hardest boss designs in modern gaming because Waterfowl Dance is basically a frame-perfect skill check, I ran into it like fifteen times before I figured out to roll through the first flurry instead of away from it — once you internalize that muscle memory everything clicks and then she's just another puzzle piece. As for modding recommendations there are literally thousands but if you want something that feels native I always point people toward SkyUI with Skyrim Forge since those two together handle almost every other dependency automatically, though personally I went down a rabbit hole of the Forgotten City quest mod which is essentially Skyrim 2 and it's probably one of the best quests ever written for any RPG. Speaking of Elder Scrolls actually my cousin had this funny experience where he was trying to set up his first playthrough on an old laptop that kept crashing during every boss fight so we ended up watching a walkthrough while playing simultaneously like a weird collaborative reading session which honestly turned out being way more fun than just grinding solo because we'd keep debating the optimal strategy and then seeing what actually worked versus what we thought would work. That kind of shared discovery is what I love about this hobby most -- that moment when something difficult finally makes sense after struggling with it, like that feeling of finally beating a boss you swore never to face again or finding that perfect mod combination where everything just works together and the game becomes your own personal creation rather than someone else's. Skyrim especially has such deep roots in modding culture that there are literally cities and dungeons built entirely by players which is something no other RPG really offers on that scale, so definitely keep exploring -- you might end up spending a hundred hours building custom character stories instead of actually playing the game but hey that's part of the appeal.
