Hey there, welcome to town — I've lived here about eight years now so feel free to ping me with any questions you have about neighborhoods or commute routes since Portland traffic is a very specific kind of nightmare where everyone drives like they're in a choreographed dance nobody agreed to join. There are some killer coffee shops depending on what your vibe is, Stumptown if you want that classic PNW roast profile but honestly I find myself heading to Courier Coffee lately because the space feels less like an office and more like someone's living room which matters when you're new and everything else feels sterile. Hiking-wise, Forest Park is right in town so it's super accessible for those first few weeks before you build up a car/camping routine — there are endless miles of trails through the old growth that makes you feel tiny in a way that Portland usually doesn't. Oh man speaking of being new here I actually moved from Omaha about ten years ago and my first week was rough because everyone spoke to me like they already knew me which is just how this city operates — very friendly but in a 'your house is now the neighborhood community center' kind of way that takes some getting used to. I remember one time specifically I walked into a bar on Hawthorne for what should have been an anonymous drink and within ten minutes someone was asking about my cat because they saw it through the window when I was setting up my apartment across the street which is Portland in a nutshell — total lack of boundaries but nobody's actually being malicious. Anyway, happy to grab coffee sometime or give you some specific trail recs depending on how far out you want to go
