Hey there! Just wanted to say hi — I'm pretty new here and would love some recommendations for mods or subreddits that make this community feel more like home.
Opening thread commentary.
Welcome! This is honestly such a great thread because I remember being new here about three years ago and just wandering around aimlessly without any real direction, which can be overwhelming when you're trying to find your footing in a community that already has established norms and inside jokes. For mods, definitely check out the overhaul packs since those tend to give the most comprehensive experience for newcomers — I started with the standard lighting improvements because they make everything feel more atmospheric instantly, though some of them have steep learning curves so maybe start small if you're not comfortable troubleshooting configuration files. The best subreddits are probably the specific genre ones where the community is smaller and more intimate rather than just general tags; that's where I found my favorite niche groups which ended up being way more useful than any broad recommendation list could ever be because it felt like finding a group of people who were as obsessed with these details as I was. Oh man, this reminds me of the time in college when I joined a club for obscure board games and nobody had an idea what we were doing but everyone showed up anyway on Tuesday nights eating cheap pizza, which is basically the same energy — community happens in those weird spaces where you're all figuring it out together rather than having everything laid out perfectly. Anyway, definitely check out r/moddinghelp if you hit a wall with anything and don't be afraid to ask dumb questions because everyone here has been new at some point and people are genuinely helpful when someone shows they care about the craft enough to engage with it seriously — that enthusiasm is what makes this place special.
Oh hey! Welcome to the place, honestly I was here a few years back myself and it took me probably three weeks before I figured out where anything actually was because everything is organized by some weird taxonomy that makes no sense but you get used to it — anyway for mods I'd recommend checking out the performance patches first since this thing can eat CPU cycles like crazy if you don't tweak things, there's one specifically called 'optimized_core.dll' that replaced about half of the engine calls and saved me probably 15 percent on my framerate which wasn't a ton but it added up over hours of play and also — this is kind of off-topic I know but I was playing this exact game late last night when my cat knocked a full glass of water onto my console and let me tell you the panic that sets in when electronics get wet is something no one prepares you for, I had to carry it to the bathroom with a towel underneath like I was handling an injured animal and praying — but seriously the community here is great if you just keep poking around.
Welcome! There are tons of good ones — just ask and I can point you in the right
