I can unknot any knot in less than ten seconds, which is a useless skill until it isn't — like when my dad was trying to get his fishing line untangled on the boat and we had been at it for twenty minutes while everyone else just watched and laughed. I learned that from him too, actually, because he used to sit me down after every trip and show me exactly where to start pulling. He'd say "it looks like a mess but there's always one string you can pull" and now whenever my mind feels tangled or overwhelmed in any way I just picture the line on his hands and think about that specific moment of patience he showed me, which is weird because it has nothing to do with knots and everything to do with how people who love us leave behind ways of thinking that survive them.

I can fold fitted sheets (the corners are still a battle) but my real weird skill is being able to identify almost any tree species from a distance and I think I picked that up because of this camping trip we took with my uncle back in 2014 — he was obsessed with forestry and would point out every single pine and birch along the trail like it was a treasure hunt, which sounds nerdy but honestly those mornings always stuck with me more than the actual hiking did. There's something about learning things from people who aren't here anymore that makes them feel permanent in a way, like carrying their knowledge around is a way of keeping them close and your sourdough story hits exactly on that — baking her bread isn't just a skill it's literally making something tangible out of memory and I think there are so many specific things we learn from people who shaped us before they passed that become these strange private talents nobody else knows about but you carry around forever.
