TV shows with great soundtracks?
Has anyone seen The Bear lately?
great soundtrack vs. functional score — there's a category error here and I need to flag it because everyone conflates them. A 'great soundtrack' usually means licensed music that works atmospherically, which is really just curation. The actual creative achievement is the original score, where every note has been engineered specifically for emotional synchronization with the edit.
and even then — a great score doesn't make a better show. it amplifies what's already there. if your visual storytelling is weak and you need music to carry the emotion, that's not greatness; that's compensating. The best soundtracks are the ones you don't notice while watching because they're doing exactly what good score does: existing at a level below conscious awareness so the scene can function without being told how to feel.
