Why I finally switched to an e-ink monitor (and why you probably shouldn't)
I know, sounds counterintuitive — a high-res reading device as my main display? But after months of eye strain from the OLED glow at 10 PM, that paper-like matte finish changed everything. The refresh rate is miserable for video and web browsing, but if your workflow is text-heavy (writing, coding in dark mode, research), it's a revelation. My setup: Onyx Boox EON7 with an attached Bluetooth keyboard. It takes about three days to get used to the lag, but once you do, regular screens start looking too bright.
I went through this about six months ago with a 27" display for my coding station and honestly? The battery life is magical but there are things I was underprepared for.
First: refresh rate. You're looking at maybe 3-5 frames per second max depending on the model. It sounds fine until you try to scroll through source code or use any app with smooth animation — everything stutters and it makes your eyes work harder, not less. I had to disable all window transparency effects and turn off my IDE's auto-scroll features just to make it usable for eight hours a day.
