What should I cook tonight?
I was thinking maybe lasagna or something quick and hearty because the weather has been miserable lately with all this rain — my aunt used to make this incredible casserole that had a breadcrumb topping and she would always tell me that the secret is in how long you let it rest before serving, which sounds like common sense but somehow makes everything taste better. I remember one Thanksgiving when we didn't have enough dishes and had to use plastic containers and the food tasted worse probably because of the stress of everything going wrong at once; my grandmother used to say that the kitchen is the heart of the home so if you treat your cooking with respect it will treat you back. Anyway I don't know what this has to do with dinner but I keep thinking about how different things were when we had real meals together as a family and now everyone is always ordering takeout or eating on their phones while watching TV which is fine I guess but there was something special about passing dishes around the table -- so maybe lasagna sounds good because it feels like a proper meal.
