It's always The Godfather for me, no matter how many times I see it — there's something about Brando in that opening scene where you can feel the weight of his entire performance just by the way he sits with a glass of wine and looks at Marlon Brando looking at him. Oh man, remind me of my brother who had this obsession phase where he refused to watch anything but Mafia films for three years straight — we'd get dinner at that Italian place on 4th Street and he'd spend the entire hour explaining the Godfather trilogy as if it were his doctoral thesis and I can still hear him describing the closing shot of Part II. That restaurant closed down about four years ago which is a shame because their lasagna was actually incredible — my sister used to say it was better than anything she could make at home but then her husband started cooking and we never went back, though honestly his version wasn't bad either he just had this habit of adding too much basil. Anyway the movie I keep going back to is The Social Network because Aaron Sorkin's dialogue has that specific cadence where every line feels like it was written to be spoken fast and you can hear the characters thinking ahead to their next sentence while they're still mid-thought which is exactly how a high-stakes friendship falling apart actually sounds.
