My stupid cat keeps eating my grilled chicken -- help!
Hey everyone, quick sanity check. I just finished a perfect wood-fired chicken and within TMI minutes, Barnaby has already dragged two pieces under the sofa like it's an Olympic sport. Is there any way to keep him out of the grill area without building a cage, or have we all accepted that this is the natural order of things?
I had this exact same problem with my ginger tabby, Marmalade, who was obsessed with grilled chicken to a degree that bordered on pathological -- she wouldn't eat her kibble if there was even a faint aroma of poultry in the air. I tried every deterrent imaginable: foil wrapping the counter edges, locking cabinets, decoy food plates positioned strategically around the kitchen, even trying to train her with clicker work which obviously failed because cats don't respond to positive reinforcement the way dogs do and she just figured out that if she waited long enough for me to go into another room I could reach anything -- oh this reminds me of my grandmother's cat Barnaby who was absolutely huge and used to walk across our table while we were eating dinner which was ridiculous because he looked like a lion but had the personality of a grumpy old man with gout. My grandmother would just sigh and move her plate, never getting angry, which is what I wish I could do when Marmalade knocked my salad onto the floor this morning -- it's actually been a really tough week overall, not directly related to cats but I don't know why everything keeps piling up at once with work deadlines and then personal stuff that feels like it came out of nowhere. Anyway you should probably get some pet gates or a microchip feeder which is what we ended up doing because the foil thing just made her smarter instead of stopping her -- she could open the foil now so never do that.
Lol no way -- mine does too!!
Ugh, I have this exact problem with my orange tabby. She's learned to sit between me and the grill and just stare until something falls. The trick is a foil tray covered in aluminum on the counter right next to where you serve — it catches everything before it hits the floor. Also keep the chicken scraps out of reach because once they smell one piece, there's no stopping them.
I have this exact same problem with my Siamese and it's hilarious because she looks at me like I'm personally responsible for her chicken theft -- which technically i am since i leave it on the counter to plate it faster lol
The thing about cats and chicken is that it's actually physiologically interesting because they can taste protein differently than humans do but my cat Luna literally stares at a grilled thigh with such focused intensity that I start to wonder what she's seeing and the answer is probably nothing complex just raw instinct but then you have to consider the broader question of why we let pets eat our food in the first place which brings up some interesting sociological questions about human-animal domestication and how we rewired ourselves to find this behavior charming rather than alarming -- I remember my uncle used to keep a rooster that would follow him around like a dog and he'd feed it scraps from his dinner and one day he came home with the whole bird under his arm because apparently the chicken had learned to steal food too which is actually a really good lesson in what happens when you reward unwanted behavior -- anyway sorry, I went off on a tangent but my advice would be to use double-sided tape around your counter edges or just stop grilling indoors because honestly if your cat wants grilled chicken every night maybe it's time to hire a professional chef for him and admit defeat early.
Oh god I am so sorry about your chicken -- cats will literally devour anything that is warm and smells like it was cooked, there's no filter with them -- actually this reminds me of my cat Barnaby who used to do the exact same thing but instead of chicken he would somehow find a way to get into the bread box and eat entire baguettes while I was at work and I found him sleeping in the middle of four halves of a baguette like some sort of bizarre Bread King -- that was three years ago before we moved apartments because Barnaby's appetite became genuinely concerning -- my new place has better security but he still finds ways, it's his mission -- anyway for your chicken problem you can try to keep all food in sealed containers or get one of those microchip feeders that only open for a specific pet and I read that some people use bird deterrent sprays around the kitchen counters which might work since cats hate citrus smells although Barnaby used to be immune to everything -- maybe just make less chicken while he's around?
oh i totally get this and honestly cats do it because they're tiny predators wired to eat high-protein meat first so your chicken smells like a hunt response in their brain -- you can try making them an alternative meal at the same time or getting an ultrasonic deterrent but one thing that worked for me was using a stainless steel bowl since some cats are afraid of metal sounds and i actually have this story about my cat Barnaby who used to steal exactly three pieces of chicken every single night like he had a quota -- so i bought him a tiny costume collar with little bells on it the kind that makes jingle noises when he moves and within two days he stopped because apparently the constant ringing annoyed him too which is hilarious because cats are supposed to be stealthy killers but my cat was literally jingling his way around the kitchen like a Christmas ornament -- anyway yeah you could try the bowl trick or a bell collar or just make them their own chicken
ugh I feel this in my soul -- we had the exact same thing with a tabby named Hobbes who would literally ambush me between the grill and the table like he was going for Olympic gold. The fix that worked for us: buy some of those little silicone lids for serving platters (the ones that snap on) so it's harder to snatch, plus keep his food bowl in a different room entirely when you're grilling -- sounds silly but keeping him occupied with treats over there instead of hovering by the patio door makes all the difference.
ugh mine does this too and it is genuinely infuriating because she waits until i walk away to do it. like, a whole five seconds of me being in another room = chicken theft.
honestly -- try putting a lid on the platter or just serving her a tiny piece first so she feels involved? works for us but idk maybe not yours.
