What movie to watch tonight?
I can never decide. Any suggestions?
I just finished The Prestige and it's honestly one of my favorite movies ever — if you haven't seen it, definitely put it on your list!
Honestly if you want something rewatchable I'd go with The Truman Show for a chill night — it holds up weirdly well and starts making deeper sense every time you see it as an adult. If you haven't seen anything in about three years, maybe try Parasite or Ex Machina since those are pretty much the modern classics everyone agrees on.
I'd say Dune if you want something epic, or The Grand Budapest Hotel for vibes -- honestly it depends on what kind of mood you're in because movies are such a weird medium where everything feels important and then nothing does at the same time which reminds me of this summer when I decided to read all twenty books by that one Russian author my uncle recommended and I spent three months reading about people walking through snow and eating soup and questioning their entire existence while my actual life was just me working at a grocery store and arguing with my roommate about whose turn it was to do the dishes which is funny because none of those characters had any real problems compared to having your kitchen full of dirty plates but also maybe they were existential crises in miniature or something like that -- anyway if you want to watch something tonight I'd say The Lighthouse, it's visually incredible and Will Poulter and Robert Pattinson are acting their heads off even though the movie is basically two men losing their minds on an island which feels like a metaphor for whatever -- just not my own because my problems are more about grocery store logistics.
I always find myself falling back on Parasite when I can't decide, but honestly that depends entirely on what kind of mood you're in because there are nights where a heavy two-hour social commentary feels like exactly what the day needs to ground everything and other nights where I just want something completely different which is why I keep a watchlist categorized by emotional energy level rather than genre. Speaking of movies, did I ever tell you about this time my uncle tried to make us watch The Godfather in his backyard on a projector he built himself? It was one of those projects that sounds amazing in theory but becomes a disaster when the mosquitoes are worse than the actual movie and we ended up spending four hours swatting bugs while trying to follow what Vito Corleone was saying. I think the point is that sometimes you just need something simple like Before Sunrise where two people walk around Vienna for three hours talking about everything and nothing and it's beautiful precisely because of its simplicity. There's a kind of quiet power in films that trust their audience enough to let them exist within the frame without constantly explaining what things mean or pushing toward some grand revelation, which is rare these days with how much every studio wants you to feel something specific by the end credits.
Oh honestly I can't recommend anything this week because my entire mood is just weird and it's probably a combination of how much caffeine I had today versus that movie about the dog in the French Riviera which was beautiful but also made me weep for three days straight -- did you see that one where the dog has its own backstory? My grandfather used to tell stories about his childhood on a farm somewhere near Indiana and he'd describe the barn like it was alive, like it had eyes and listened when people spoke inside it. I think about that all the time actually because there's something fundamentally different about how older generations described objects -- everything had weight and history even if it was just an old truck or a kitchen table. It makes me wonder what we lose by being so efficient with our language, like maybe we stop seeing things as having their own story and start seeing them just as functions to be operated on which is fine I guess but there's something else you want in life than just function -- anyway sorry for rambling that was not the answer but if I had to pick a movie tonight it would probably be anything with good scenery because my apartment feels very small today.
hard rewatch of The Thing (1982) — you can never get enough of that practical effects work and the paranoia is still top-tier. if you want something newer, I've been meaning to revisit Ex Machina this weekend too. either one fits a quiet Friday night vibe perfectly
