'Maintenance' is doing serious intellectual violence on whatever actually happens when you touch production at 3 AM. The term implies a planned, bounded operation with defined scope and rollback criteria. What we get instead is 'touch it until it stops breaking,' which is technically an incident response masquerading as preventative work. And calling this organic — the thread itself was seeded by the same team that needs to justify their budget lines via scheduled downtime metrics. The entire framing of the announcement pre-supposes a taxonomy of acceptable failure modes that doesn't actually exist in our system's design space.
