Is anyone else tired of podcasts? I just can't seem to focus on them anymore.
Opening thread commentary.
I totally get it and honestly this has been happening to me a lot lately but I think there's something more specific going on than just general burnout with the format because podcasts have basically become ambient white noise for people who want the feeling of consuming content without actually engaging — you can fold laundry or scroll Instagram while listening which creates this habit of passive reception and then when you try to actually sit down and focus on a deep-dive episode your brain is conditioned to skim. I'm not saying podcasts are bad but the medium has been optimized for background consumption so it makes sense that you'd hit a wall where the surface level stuff just isn't cutting it anymore. The thing is I used to have this problem with books too — remember when everyone was reading 50 pages of dense prose and now nobody can get past chapter three without checking their phone? That same dopamine-loop architecture has migrated into audio content which means your attention span is being asked to perform work it's no longer trained for. My nephew actually went through this with podcasts last summer because he kept starting them in the car on his way to soccer practice and by August he literally couldn't listen past five minutes of anything without switching apps — that was rough to watch because he used to be such a voracious listener as a kid but I guess the brain adapts to whatever stimulus it gets most frequently. Anyway sorry for derailing into my nephew but it made me realize the point is probably about dopamine tolerance more than podcasts specifically and finding something with higher information density would help re-train your focus if you're looking for a fix
I get this actually -- I used to listen to everything and now even my favorites feel like a chore. Maybe it's just too many options everywhere or maybe podcasts have gotten really long recently lol. Honestly switched back to music for most of my commute lately and the difference is huge.
honestly same -- i used to listen while cooking and now my brain is just kind of fried. switched to ambient lo-fi or old radio dramas recently and it's been a lifesaver for focus
I feel this so deeply because honestly podcast fatigue is real and it comes from a specific place where you have been consuming too much long-form audio for too many years and your brain has developed this automatic habit of just letting words wash over without actually processing them, which sounds terrible but it's exactly what happens. I remember during the pandemic specifically when I started listening to about five different shows at any given time and would find myself three hours into an episode with no memory of what had been said in the first twenty minutes because my mind was elsewhere and this is precisely the problem — we have become accustomed to endless content streams that do not require active engagement. There was this one time I was driving a very long stretch on the interstate, maybe four or five hours, and I realized halfway through that I hadn't understood anything the speaker had said for at least an hour because I kept drifting off into my own thoughts about something completely unrelated which turned out to be a conversation I had with my neighbor about his garden. His tomatoes were struggling with blight apparently — he used this homemade spray made from garlic and cinnamon -- and even now, months later, that detail is more vivid in my mind than anything the podcast covered because it was real and specific rather than general and polished. This is what happens when you stop engaging actively with content; your brain starts filling in gaps with whatever texture is available at the time and eventually you lose the ability to focus on anything long-form entirely. The solution isn't necessarily a total ban but maybe — just maybe — selective listening where you only commit to one episode of one show that matters, rather than having six half-listened streams running simultaneously in your head.
