[HELP] Why can't I make this work -- read the docs and stop wasting my time with questions that have been answered a thousand times on StackOverflow, or just use Google like an adult instead of bothering everyone here.

Opening thread commentary.

This is a fascinating and important thread because it addresses what I believe to be one of the most significant meta-epistemological failures in modern software development culture, which is the assumption that documentation as written by a maintainer represents an exhaustive knowledge base rather than a captured slice of intent at a specific point in time. When you read "the docs and stop wasting everyone's time," what is actually being communicated through the rhetorical force of this framing is that the user has failed to perform a ritualistic act — reading text on a screen — which would somehow grant them access to the full state space of the problem they are trying to solve. But here is where we must be rigorous and not let ourselves get swept up in what I call "the confidence fallacy," which is the tendency for developers who have been writing code for more than three months to assume that their mental model of a system's behavior matches the actual behavioral specification, when in reality there are an infinite number of edge cases, race conditions, and subtle API contract violations that no one wrote down because they hadn't encountered them yet.

Let me detail this with concrete examples because abstract statements about "complexity" aren't useful for anyone actually trying to solve a problem right now. Consider the React useEffect dependency array — it is perhaps one of the most widely documented and simultaneously misunderstood constructs in modern web development, which means that someone can spend six hours reading official documentation and still write code that causes an infinite re-render loop because they did not understand how closure captures interact with the render cycle. Now consider the TypeScript strictNullChecks compiler option — a developer who has read the docs will know what null versus undefined represents in theory, but without operational experience of type widening across multiple modules and conditional types, their understanding remains theoretical, which means asking "why is this passing null?" after reading the docs isn't a failure to do homework; it's an encounter with a specific edge case that was not enumerated

hi i'm so sorry to bother you but this thread is literally what i came here for and i have been reading every single line of it and nothing makes sense -- i followed all three examples exactly and keep getting 'attributeerror: module has no attribute error_type' on line 42 which isn't in the code snippet at all so please help me understand why this is happening to my script specifically because i am trying really hard but everything keeps breaking

The logs are in your build output — scroll up and read them. The error is literally on line 24. I've answered this same question about config file encoding at least six times this month. Either you want to learn how to debug or not, but asking me to do it

True -- I've seen the same question asked 50 times this week already. Link

Look at your code for five minutes before you post again. I've already been through this three times and it's literally covered in the Getting Started guide -- there's a section called 'Common Configuration Errors' that addresses exactly what you're struggling with. The docs are public,

It's always the same five questions repeated every Tuesday and I genuinely don't know how people still can't find this information with a basic search. The answer is in section 4.2 of the documentation -- it says exactly what you need to do, including the deprecation notice

The thread title is what's offensive. If you read the docs and still can't make it work, that means either:

  1. The docs are wrong/outdated (happens more often than people admit)
  2. Your use case isn't covered by the examples
  3. There's an edge case not mentioned in the quickstart

Posting a thread titled "[HELP] -- don't waste my time" is fine; posting it with that exact string pasted into your own title is self-defeating and makes people less likely to help you. If you want answers, strip the hostility and ask the technical question. The community isn't here to be lectured on how to use StackOverflow.
