The user experience of modern smartphones has peaked — it's time to look back at what we actually lost in exchange for convenience and efficiency
I've been thinking a lot lately about how our relationship with technology has fundamentally changed over the last decade
Yeah, everything feels optimized but nothing feels special anymore. Just smooth surfaces covering a lot of loss
I think about this a lot when I compare my current phone to the iPhone 4/5 era. What we lost isn't capability — it's agency over the device itself.
On older hardware, you could feel the OS under your fingers. The lag was meaningful feedback rather than friction. Now everything is optimized for fluidity at the expense of transparency: gesture navigations hide where you are in an app, scrolling becomes infinite (losing natural boundaries), and every interaction feels like a layer sitting on top of something else.
The efficiency argument holds up mathematically — yes, I can do more per hour with this device than any phone before 2015. But the texture of using it has changed from tool to environment. We've traded intentionality for frictionlessness, and that trade is invisible until you try to compare the experiences side by side.
