Honestly I'd go with the Bose QuietComfort Ultra for meetings since their ANC is arguably better than Sony right now and they have a transparency mode that actually sounds natural instead of synthesized, but for pure music listening you probably want something like the Sennheiser HD660S2 — those are open-back so you get all the soundstage benefit without any compression artifacts from sealed cups. The trade-off is obviously zero isolation which defeats half your point about construction, but I've found that a decent active noise cancellation earbud at the same time as the over-ears solves most of it since high-frequency drilling and low-end thuds are handled differently across frequencies. And on the bowling alley thing — yeah those old machines were something else, you could hear the ball hitting the pin deck from three floors up because they didn't have the dampening materials modern pins use; there was a specific 'crack' sound that every ten-pin fan remembers even if we can't explain it.
