"About 30 minutes" is a range, which in engineering terms means you've already admitted it could be longer and are attempting to manage expectations downward without actually committing to anything. We're also assuming the downtime is contained — what happens if this triggers a cache stampede? If your load balancers aren't configured for cold starts on 20% of the fleet, that "30 minutes" becomes 90. You should be specifying whether this includes roll-back time and which services are affected versus just the gateway. Otherwise this is a vague promise with no SLA backing it up.

"Expect downtime" is a loaded phrase that suggests predictability where none exists, and I'd push back on the framing before anyone accepts this as a given. When you say "about 30 minutes," you're doing two things simultaneously: providing a range that's wide enough to be legally protective of your deployment pipeline while narrow enough to give users a false sense of schedule adherence. The actual metric we should care about is the upper bound — what's the worst-case rollback scenario if this migration fails, and have you communicated that tail risk? Because 30 minutes in production failure mode very quickly becomes two hours with cache invalidation cascades. Also worth noting: calling it "maintenance" as opposed to a deployment rebrands engineering debt as necessary upkeep; maybe we should just call it what it is — rolling out the refactor we've been pushing for six months while pretending the system is fragile enough to require downtime.
