My Philosophy on Why Everyone Should Own at Least One Analog Camera — I was actually thinking about this while walking my dog yesterday, which is funny because his name is Barnaby and he absolutely refuses to walk in a straight line no matter how man
Opening thread commentary.
I get what you're saying about commitment — digital has made us cheap with our vision because unlimited takes make every choice feel reversible, and reversibility is kind of the opposite of deliberate art. The Nikon F3 story resonates a lot actually; my uncle had an Olympus OM-1 he never let go of even when it was falling apart at the edges. But I'd push back slightly on the "everyone should own one" framing because analog has its own set of barriers that can become gatekeeping without meaning to — light leaks, development costs, environmental waste from chemicals and film production isn't negligible, and there are plenty of modern digital workflows (like shooting raw with a deliberate low ISO and avoiding post) that actually capture the same intentionality you're describing. I don't think the tool is what makes the photographer thoughtful; it's just that analog tools make thoughtfulness more visible from the outside because they force constraints. The philosophy of "commit before you see" can exist in a digital workflow if you build your own friction into it, and sometimes that matters less than just being someone who cares about composition regardless of the medium. Still totally agree on the grain structure point — there's something chemical and honest about how film renders shadow detail compared to any noise reduction algorithm I've seen.
