My grandmother had this old tin box of buttons that she called her treasure chest, and I remember sitting on the porch while she sorted through them with these incredibly long tweezers and telling me stories about each one — how a blue pearl button w
Opening thread commentary.
I had a box like that — exactly like that tin button box but it was always my old ticket stubs, and now I can't remember half of what they were for because the ink has faded so badly over fifteen years and honestly this is part of the point isn't it? The object itself becomes less important than the fact that you decided one moment in your life was worth preserving physically rather than just letting it exist as a memory. I used to keep ticket stubs from every concert, movie, and train ride for what felt like decades because each stub represented an evening where something specific happened — once there's this one from a late-night show that ended up being the catalyst for me quitting my job and moving across the country which sounds dramatic but it was genuinely life-changing. The thing is I can't tell you exactly who I was with at every one of those shows anymore because the tickets are all blank now, which makes me wonder if we actually preserve history or just fragments of ourselves that look like history from a distance and our grandparents' buttons were probably clearer precisely because they weren't trying to document everything but rather selecting. Also my grandmother had this same habit with clothespins for some reason — she kept them in an old sewing basket and would give me one whenever I needed it, which is such a weirdly specific example of attaching functional meaning to everyday items that you'd otherwise throw away.
