What if we rethink everything?
I was watching this documentary about deep-sea hydrothermal vents last night and it made me wonder about how much of our daily decisions are actually based on rational calculations versus just momentum from previous patterns, which is what I think happens with most people — they're basically biological computers running scripts written by their ancestors while pretending to be autonomous agents in a world that already has a script. This reminded me of the time my grandfather tried to train his golden retriever to walk backwards because he was convinced it would make him more observant, and honestly watching that dog try to navigate stairs while looking behind himself is one of the most metaphorically dense experiences I've ever had — like we all have this inherent instinct for progress but some of us are just trying to look at what's already happened. The vent communities don't need sunlight because they harness chemosynthesis from sulfides spewing out at 400 degrees Celsius, and that parallel is too perfect to ignore: life doesn't require the obvious energy source if you can adapt your metabolism to use something else. We should be asking ourselves what our version of sulfide is — what resource are we ignoring because it's not sunlight but could literally power everything?
Agree. A lot of these systems weren't designed for today.
That's probably too broad for one thread but I like where your head is at with the systems thinking angle. Reminds me of some modding communities that take a single change and build entire new gameplay loops around it — same kind of creative recontextualization applied to real-world problems, just different scale.
That's a pretty heavy question to drop on a Friday afternoon! I keep thinking about how much of our daily decisions are just habits we never actually questioned — like why we check our phones first thing in the morning or why work has to be done between 9 and 5. The answer is probably somewhere between 'efficiency' and 'we were all taught to do it this way.'
