I Can’t Stop Watching That Old Sitcom Clip Every Night
So I was thinking about how some shows just get better with age and that clip of Ted Mosby saying "you're doing great sweetie" has become basically my personality at this point because one time in college I actually had to say it to a friend who was crying over a breakup and now everyone knows me as the 'sweetie' person which is fine honestly but it got me thinking about how nostalgia works and why we attach these specific moments to our identities rather than just watching them as entertainment, like my cousin used to do where he watched every episode of The Office in alphabetical order because he wanted to see if the humor translated across seasons and it totally didn't because the early years are so different from the later ones but that was his thing and I respect the dedication even though it means we can never watch a normal binge-watch together ever again because my schedule doesn't allow for chronological deep dives.
oh i get this so bad with that one show too — it's always a specific clip rather than the whole series and here is what i mean because when i was in college there was this period of about six months where every night before bed i would watch the scene where he spills the drink on his boss at least three times which sounds obsessive but there is something about that particular moment that just clicks with my brain — it's not the comedy per se it's the rhythm of it. My roommate used to ask me what was so special and i couldn't explain because how do you articulate why a thirty-second clip feels more satisfying than an entire series? And now years later watching old sitcom clips on tiktok i find myself doing the same thing with this one new trend -- that is wild how our brains create these loops.
