What does it mean to build something that lasts?

I was thinking about this because my grandfather used to carve every single chair in our house by hand and I remember sitting on one at age seven wondering why a wooden seat had personality, which led me to think about how we've lost craft in the digital era where everything is disposable and fast, but then it reminded me of that summer in 1984 when my family drove across Nebraska and got stuck behind a tornado shelter for three days and I learned more about resilience from watching my father fix a radiator with nothing but wire and sheer willpower than any textbook could teach, which makes the question deeper than craftsmanship — it's about what you do when things break.
