Revisiting our definition of "engagement" as announced this morning — we need to stop conflating it with resonance

The announcement uses engagement in three different ways without acknowledging that each one actually describes a different psychological phenomenon. First, "active participation" implies agency the user may not have; clicking through a mandatory flow is compliance, not engagement. Second, "resonance" assumes an emotional texture that quantitative metrics can't measure — if someone spends 20 minutes on a page they hate, that's friction we're mislabeling as depth. Third, and most importantly, the statement suggests these metrics are predictive of retention when in fact historical data from our own Q3 shows that high-engagement users churn at higher rates because they over-invest emotionally before hitting feature walls. We should be optimizing for sustained moderation rather than intensity spikes — I know this contradicts the directionality of the announcement but we're measuring enthusiasm instead of durability and those are not synonyms.
